We take sewer misuse and environmental impacts seriously. Our focus is on:
- ensuring any Moist Toilet Tissue we label as flushable meets internationally recognised testing requirements
- continuing to label non-flushable wipes on front of pack with the Do Not Flush logo
- continuing to work with regulators and the water industry to support consistent standards across the market.
Yes. Andrex Hygiene Wipes are safe to flush. They have passed independent, international EDANA flushability standards for more than a decade as well as meeting the UK water industry tests* and are safe for UK sewers, as they break up easily when flushed. We give clear guidance on pack and urge everyone to only use one to two wipes per flush.
*Andrex Hygiene Wipes, are tested at an official independently recognised UK water industry test centre, and also meet the international EDANA GD4 guidelines for flushability. Both standards are globally recognised as best-in-class to test whether a moist toilet tissue is flushable or not.
Flushability tests passed:
• INDA/EDANA GD4 (UK, Europe, North America, Asia)
• WIS 4-02-06 UK
Moist Toilet Tissue products like Andrex Hygiene Wipes play an important role, particularly for people with sensitive or vulnerable skin, additional intimate hygiene needs, continence issues, or limited mobility or dexterity. They are dermatologically tested and provide a more effective clean than dry toilet paper alone, helping to protect sensitive skin by cleaning effectively with less friction.
Most wipes, such as baby, cosmetic and household wipes, are much thicker and should never be flushed and we fully support the water industry’s recommendation to always put these in the bin. The only exception to this is Moist Toilet Tissue like Andrex Hygiene Wipes. They have been designed differently to regular wet wipes and engineered to mimic toilet paper so they break down easily when flushed. To ensure they break down as intended, we advise consumers to flush no more than two at a time. In addition, Andrex Hygiene Wipes have passed the Water Industry Specification (WIS) and EDANA GD4*, two of the most rigorous tests for flushability.

Sewer blockages are commonly associated with the build-up of fat, oil and grease (FOG) which often causes the problem in the first place and create the conditions for blockages to form. Items that should never be flushed can become trapped in this FOG and create fatbergs.
Moist Toilet Tissue (MTT) is specifically engineered and independently tested to recognised flushability standards and behaves very differently from conventional wet wipes (for example baby or cleaning wipes) and is carefully designed to break up in the wastewater system when used as directed.
Andrex Hygiene Wipes have passed the Water Industry Specification (WIS) and EDANA GD4*, two of the most rigorous tests for flushability.
They are tested under the kinds of conditions they would experience after being flushed - including flowing water, turbulence, repeated flushing, and travel through pipes, sewers and wastewater treatment systems. This helps ensure the tests are realistic and reliable.

Moist Toilet Tissue like Andrex Hygiene Wipes are not found in sewer audits in anything other than negligible amounts. That is because it has disintegrated. One figure in a recent UK study* was around 0.5%, with similar findings reported in a comparable US study of around 0.9%. In a 2017 Water UK study the figure was 0.88 per cent by weight.
Across sewer audits, the majority of items most frequently identified in blockages are products that are not designed to disperse in the wastewater system e.g. baby wipes, cleaning wipes, cotton buds, sanitary items, kitchen paper and nappies. [EC3.1]

Despite the discontinuation of the Fine to Flush certification in the UK, our testing standards have not changed. We remain committed to maintaining the rigorous standards for our product's flushability, so you can be reassured that our plastic-free Andrex® Hygiene Wipes continue to be safe for UK sewers and meet international INDA/EDANA standards for flushability.
No. Andrex® Hygiene Wipes are made from 100% cellulose fibres and don’t contain plastic. They have passed international (INDA/EDANA Flushability Guidelines) requirements and can be flushed at home. We recommend flushing 1-2 wipes per flush.
Andrex® Hygiene Wipes have been specifically designed to be flushable like toilet tissue whereas most non-flushable wipes such as baby wipes, cosmetic wipes and household cleaning wipes are much thicker in order to give wipes strength, so they don’t break up in use. Baby wipes, cosmetic wipes and household wipes must never be flushed down the toilet as they can contribute to sewer blockages and fatbergs and should be disposed of in a bin instead. That’s why we voluntarily label all non-flushable wipes with the ‘Do Not Flush’ label on their packs. Not all wipes are flushable and it is important to always check the products’ packaging for advice on how to best dispose of the product.
If a wipe is labelled ‘Do Not Flush’, it is important to throw these in the bin.
